Deaf Access provides a diverse range of groups and services aimed at supporting independence and empowerment.
The Lewisham Deaf Children’s Society is run by Felicia Samuel who writes:
‘I am a hearing parent and have a two year old deaf son. I have recently set up a group within the Lewisham borough for deaf children from the ages of 0-5. The group provides a place for parents, carers and family members to meet and chat in a relaxed environment whilst the children learn and have fun. It’s a great way to meet new people with similar experiences and for children to meet new friends that may also wear hearing aids, cochlear implants or be signers.
The sessions currently consist of sing and sign, arts and crafts, free play with toys and paints. As well as fun things for the children to do we also provide information about all aspects of hearing impairment for parents and where possible offer a member from the NDCS to give advice and support for families regarding issues around deafness.
We will also involve some deaf friends so that parents will also have the opportunity to communicate with deaf/hard of hearing people and also brush up on their BSL.
Even though the group will be based in Lewisham all are welcome.’
